Banana Milk

I make SCD legal yogurt every week, but occasionally I have a bad batch come out. The yogurt itself isn’t bad, but it has a grainy consistency. I think it happens when I’m pressed for time and I bring the milk to a boil too quickly.  I have a weird issue with the textures of food and this almost curdled texture makes it not palatable to me.  I don’t want to waste the batches so I use them in smoothies and the blender does the trick.

Since I’m just finishing up round 2 of the introductory diet to get things back on track, I can’t have the normal fruits I usually use. I’ve been drinking this “banana milk” as I like to call it every morning for the past couple of weeks and just can’t stop! I really notice a difference in the way my stomach feels if I start my day off with a tall glass. The probiotics in the yogurt settle my gut and the banana adds a great sweetness without the use of honey. Not to mention bananas are a binding fruit! I usually buy two bunches of bananas when I go to the store. One to eat immediately, and one to let sit on the counter and get overripe for use in smoothies, muffins, and other baked goods.

This isn’t the most innovative recipe, and I’m sure I’m not the first to make it, but wanted to share it all the same.

1/2 overripe banana (with brown spots)
1/8 cup unfiltered apple juice
1 jar SCD yogurt (6-8 ounces)

Put it all in a blender and process until smooth! The consistency will be like that of whole milk or those little pro biotic drinks you can buy at the grocery store.

We have been browsing your site and recipes and have noticed that this one says that you are just now finishing up the intro diet, thought you have been doing it for quite a while?

Hi Traci- Thanks for catching that. I meant to say “round 2” of the Intro diet. I did a previous post about how I fell off during pregnancy but started back on after seeing some symptoms creep back in a couple of weeks ago.

Ok, thank you. So are you full blown SCD now? How important would you say sticking through the intro is? Also, Elaine said to absolutely not stay on the SCD for more than 5 days. But – do you find it beneficial to stay on longer? Thank you…

Yes, 100% on it. No cheating, not even with the yummy crackers my son eats! It’s so hard. I actually did the intro diet a couple of weeks back, did some minor cheating and then added foods back in too quickly and didn’t see the results I needed. So I did 5 days of hardcore Intro and am doing much better. I’m easing back on to cooked fruits and vegetables right now.

I agree with Elaine. More than 5 days and you could waste away to nothing! If you’re starting to see improvement, I’d stick to it. Then add in a new food at a time and give it a couple of days in between to see if your body reacts. has a great chart for phases of adding foods back in.

Hello Danielle, I just discovered your blog through Jordan and Steve’s ”SCD Lifestyle” website, and I think it looks amazing, love the contents as well, this is great ! I have been diagnosed with UC last January and right now I’m on prednisone, and I want to try everything before I have to take immunosuppressants. I am on day 6 of the SCD diet, and I find it hard at times to be adding new foods so slowly, but reading blogs like yours make me want to stick to it. Thank you so much.

    • Danielle says:

Hi Mary- thanks for stopping by! Prednisone is the devil. I was on 100 mg at one point and got every side effect in the books. I hope to never have to go on it again. I know adding the foods in slowly is difficult, but it definitely helps. Just think, in a couple of months you can be enjoying all of the great stuff and you’ll be feeling great! Please keep us updated on your progress on the diet!

This looks yummy! I’m in the hospital right now with a bad flare, but just started the SCD intro diet 3 days ago and I’m already seeing improvement. Can’t wait to get home and make this smoothie! And the blog looks wonderful – I’ll definitely be following it!

    • Danielle says:

Oh I’m sorry to hear you’re in the hospital. I’ve been in there myself 4 or 5 times. 100 mg prednisone, blood transfusions the works. I hope you start to feel better soon! My biggest piece of advice is don’t jump into advanced foods too soon (nuts, coconut milk etc.). I always have set backs when I do. Good luck, and thanks for following my blog!
